Swiss are nostalgic for the pre-COVID-19 restaurant atmosphere [survey results]

With the coronavirus crisis continuing across Europe, we want to take the pulse of consumers who usually frequent restaurants to see if and how their dining habits had chang, and what they were planning as the holiday season approaches.

We conduct this survey among 1,000 Belgians and 200 Swiss.

Some key results to remember ( note that the survey was carri out before the announcement of new health restrictions leading to the partial or total closure of restaurants in Switzerland and Belgium ):

Only 7% of Belgians and 4% of Swiss plan to eat in a restaurant during the end-of-year holidays (if they are allow to reopen of course)
Just over a quarter of Belgian (29%) and Swiss (28%) respondents would be prepar to eat at a restaurant during the holidays if the distance of one and a half metres between tables is ensur. ( It should be not that the same percentage of both Belgians and Swiss do not want to eat at a restaurant as long as the virus is present – ​​a problem that will hopefully soon be resolv with the launch of a vaccine against the coronavirus ).
If before the appearance of COVID-19, home food after finding the answers to these questions delivery was experiencing significant growth (according to the consulting firm Insites Consulting, more than one in three Belgians claims to have already order food at least once in 2018 ), it is a safe bet that the future lies even more in the meal delivery service.

 

More than 30% of Belgian respondents say they are cg leads ordering more meals for delivery or takeaway than before the outbreak of COVID-19 , including 11% who say they are doing so to support the restaurant sector. In Switzerland, nearly 27% of respondents say they have increas their use of meal delivery and click & collect, including 6% doing so explicitly to support the restaurant sector.

The importance of delivery and click & collect

During this period, large gourmet or Michelin-starr restaurants also start offering meals. 15% of Belgians and 17% of Swiss would order this type of meal if it were cheaper and 12% of Belgians / 9% of Swiss would consider a chic lunch box for home if it comes with decoration.
