Fonts, or fonts, are an integral part of website design today. We use them both for better readability of texts, but increasingly also as graphic elements. After all, many icons are often loaded on the web like fonts.
And there is definitely something to deal with. From the selection itself to loading optimization. Even a person who does not want to work with code can solve many things in the WordPress editorial system, but the tips are also valid for other platforms or manually coded websites.
Where to get fonts
Similar to images and other works, fonts are subject to different licenses. Therefore, you cannot use any font that is offered to you for all purposes. Especially special fonts are usually paid for.
However, these days, most of us can make do with the Google Fonts database , which contains over a thousand different fonts. At the same time, it also provides the option to load fonts directly from Google servers. You can choose either the complete font or just certain styles to use and save time loading them.
If you want to display Czech diacritics
you will always be interested in whether the given font supports the “Latin Extended” language, where there are also Czech characters. Be sure to try out the font in advance anyway, Czech characters cannot always be displayed in bold, etc. If the given character is missing, it will be replaced with another font, which does not look good at all.
How to get fonts into WordPress
WordPress basically offers 3 options to load fonts:
They are part of the template (you can choose them in settings/Template customization)
You can insert them into the code manually (for example via import in CSS)
You install the plugin
Most of the templates today contain a link to Google Fonts . If fonts are important to you, then this may be an important criterion when choosing it. In customization, you can then choose which font is used for the given elements. Various page builders have it similarly.
For older or simpler templates, you will have to deal with editing the code, or look for a plugin that will help with this.
When you have files directly available (e.g. from a paid font), the Custom Fonts plugin can come in handy. You can add your own fonts as if they were posts. At the same time, it integrates them directly into page builders.
Why use System Font Stack
Web fonts and especially Google Fonts were a big trend a few years ago. Find a font or integrate the option of choosing from hundreds of different ones straight into the template. But uk mobile phone number data each font also means a request, download and rendering. These are milliseconds that may not be imperceptible to visitors as a result.
This led to the “rediscovery” of the so-called System Font Stack”. This is how the fonts that are installed by default in operating systems are designated. They may not be the company makes payments every week to a bank account the prettiest, but they are already installed. So it doesn’t have to be downloaded again and again. Above all, for websites where it is more about content, this can be an option to significantly speed up their loading. At the same time, the problem with “flashing”, i.e. the situation where a placeholder font is loaded before the one that should be displayed bw lists primarily is downloaded, is eliminated.
